Military members seemingly have a greater propensity for smoking than civilians. This observation has motivated many researchers to explore the military’s historic relationship with tobacco and to examine the ways in which military culture promotes tobacco usage. The U.S. Army offers a unique opportunity to conduct natural experiments that measure cultural effects on smoking behavior because its soldiers are randomly assigned to their duty locations. My research exploits the variation in smoking behavior throughout the United States by using state level smoking prevalence rates as a proxy measure for local smoking culture.
