Background and goals: The development of a healthy and functional central nervous system (CNS) is a complex process that starts during embryogenesis and requires a precise orchestration of the differentiation of several cell types both in time and space. Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are glial – or non-neuronal – cells that originate from the same stem cells from which neurons are generated though responding to a different combination of specific molecular cues, and their first appearance is temporally located after the development of the first neurons to support and protect their extensions (axons).
