AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ SPEAKING FLUENCY ON SMP RADEN FATAH BATU AT EIGHTH GRADES

English is one of compulsory subject in Indonesia, and one of the skill that important to be mastered is speaking. When English language is taught in educational institution such as schools and universities, speaking will be part of the main skills to learn. One aspect of speaking is to speak fluently. Furthermore, SMP Raden Fatah Batu also have various strategies to learn English especially to encourage fluency which are roleplay, games, lean from musics and videos. In addition, the eighth grade was chosen because at this level students already understand about English activities. So, this aimed to know the level of students’ speaking fluency and the student’s problems faced regarding to their fluency. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative. The research data obtained by conducting document analysis and interview. The research subject of this study are students from eighth A, B and C class consist of 10 students. The document analysis was conducted using phonecall and recorder required to make it easier to analyze, also the next session is interviewing the students. The researcher used speaking fluency scale to determine students’ fluency. The result of this research showed that there were two respondents achieved scale four, there were four respondents achieved scale three, there were two respondents achieved scale two and there were two other respondents achieved scale one, in conclusion they got intermediate level or level 3. The researcher also found the problems regarding their fluency were anxiety, nervous, lack of self-confident, pronounciation and also limited vocabulary
