Syarifuddin Syukur, MA, (II) Nani Hizriani, S.Pd, MA\ud \ud The research describes about the problems of learning vocabulary of the eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Pekapuran Raya Banjarmasin academic year 2009/2010. The statement of the problems in this research are: what are the students’ problems in learning vocabulary of the eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Pekapuran Raya Banjarmasin academic year 2009/2010 and what factors that influence it.\ud The populations of the research are all of the eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Pekapuran Raya Banjarmasin that mounts 112 students. The samples of the research are 56 students (50%) from population calculated.\ud The techniques used in collecting data are observation, written test, questionnaire, interview, and documentary. Data processing in the research is editing, coding, tabulating, and data interpretation. Then all the data are analyzed by using descriptive qualitative, and concluded by inductive method \ud The result of the research indicates that the students’ mastery in English vocabulary of the eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Pekapuran Raya Banjarmasin is in low category with mean 56.82, and they have problems in matching the words or word definition. From the questionnaire it can be known that the students get others problems in translating and spelling. \ud The research also found out the factors that influence it are as follow: students’ factors; students have low interest toward English vocabulary lesson, and less active in learning English. Teacher’s factors; teacher’s educational background supports very much on English teaching and learning process, the teacher has high experience in teaching English, the teacher always attends in teaching English, and the teacher does not use various techniques in teaching English vocabulary. Facilities factors; the students’ facilities and school’s facilities are complete to support in teaching and learning English. Environment factors; family and school’s environment are less support in teaching and learning English
