THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND SPEAKING SKILLS ON STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LANGUAGE OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 MEKARSARI BATOLA REGENCY ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

The research describes the correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill on students’ English language of the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 1 Mekarsari Batola Regency Academic Year 2013/2014. The research question of this research are: 1. what is the vocabulary mastery level of the students at the Eight Grade of SMPN 1 Mekarsari. 2. What is the Speaking skill level of the students at the Eight Grade of SMPN 1 Mekarsari. 3. Is there the correlation between vocabulary master and speaking skill on students’ ability in English language.\ud The populations in this research are 72 students of the eight grade of SMPN 1 Mekarsari Batola Regency Academic Year 2013/2014. The samples of the research are 64 students of the eight grade of SMPN 1 Mekarsari Batola Regency Academic Year 2013/2014.\ud To collect the data, the writer uses some techniques such as test, interview, and documentary. Data processing in this study is divided into four stages: Editing, classifying, scoring, and tabulating. Then all data are analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 16. \ud The result of this research shows that students’ mastery on Vocabulary is in good level with average 74,76. Most students are in excellent level 40,62% or 26 students and 26,56% or 17 students are in good level. 14,06% or 9 students are in fair and low level. The students who get very low level are 4,68% or 3 students. While, the student’ skill in speaking English is in good level with average 71,06. Most of students get good and fair level are 48,43% or 31 students. 3,12% or 2 students get low level. There isn’t students get excellent and very low level. \ud So, the writer can conclude that the correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill on students’ English language of the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 1 Mekarsari Batola Regency Academic Year 2013/2014 is positive and low correlation on 0,20-0,40 level. It was proved by the value of rxy is 0, 286 based on the SPSS 16 counting. The significant of this correlation is 0,022. It means that the hypothesis null (H0) is denied and the hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking skill. The direction of the correlation is positive and low correlation
