An Examination of How Situational Leadership Affects the Attitudes and Behaviors of Employees at the American Express Property Casualty Companies

In the 1990' s, many organizations have moved toward a more decentralized management approach, characterized by empowerment of lower-level employees and increased use of teamwork. One of the most important components of success for a flat, decentralized organization is an understanding among employees about how to lead effectively. Most organizations, however, possess varied ideas about the key components of effective leadership. At the American Express Property Casualty companies in Green Bay, Wisconsin, many employees who are individual contributors (non-management) lead project teams or task forces; therefore, the ability to influence others is a critical skill for these employees. Thus, an examination of how, if at all, the Leadership for Individual Contributors (LIC) course affects American Express Property Casualty employees' attitudes and behaviors regarding leadership is important for two reasons.
