Les aciers multiphasés à effet TRIP sont étudiés depuis plusieurs années maintenant et suscitent un intérêt industriel grandissant, non seulement de la part des sidérurgistes mais également de la part des "clients" de ces derniers, à savoir les constructeurs automobiles. Il semble en effet tout à fait clair que la combinaison au sein de la même microstructure de différentes phases de l'acier (ferrite, bainite, martensite) et l'existence de l'effet TRIP (c'est-à-dire une transformation martensitique induite mécaniquement) améliore de façon importante les propriétés de résistance et de ductilité d'aciers faiblement alliés.
