Autologous bone marrow stromal cells have been proposed as an adjuvant in the treatment of bone nonunion. This cell therapy requires the establishment of culture conditions that permit the rapid expansion of these cells ex vivo while retaining their potential for further differentiation. Several culture models have been proposed, all of them using fetal calf serum (FCS) as a source of growth factors. This is problematic for subsequent autologous implantation because of possible disease transmission.
