Faced with the inevitable aging of the population, many countries are articulating programs to promote age-friendly cities. In the United Kingdom this group represents more than 20% of the population and, sustained by the policies of “aging at home”, the vast majority expect to grow old connected to their communities and with affordable costs for their care. High streets - major commercial thoroughfares in British cities - are a prominent feature of urban heritage that are serving this purpose.
