Recently, laparoscopic liver-donor nephrectomy has been developed in order to increase organ donation. In this study we compare and review the records of 10 donors operated by open extraperitoneal approach and of 10 donors operated by a laparoscopic transperitoneal approach (LSC). Results show less use of postoperative parenteral narcotics in the LSC group (109 mg vs 272 mg; P < 0.0005) than in the extraperitoneal group. Morbidity was similar in both groups. There was no difference in postoperative stay. Allograft kidney function was similar in both groups until 6 months after donation. The use of disposable laparoscopic material bears an extra cost of 900 US$. We can thus conclude that laparoscopic live-donor nephrectomy is a safe procedur...
