Previous studies have shown that several factors may influence the methylation of inorganic arsenic by rat liver in vitro (Buchet and Lauwerys, 1985). The present study attempts to assess the relevance of these observations in vivo. Like man, rat inactivates inorganic arsenic by methylation to monomethylarsonic (MMA) and dimethylarsinic (DMA) acids which are excreted in urine along with unchanged inorganic arsenic (Asi).
