Islet encapsulation requires several properties, including (1) biocompatibility, (2) immunoprotection, and (3) oxygen diffusion, for islet survival and diabetes correction. New chemical alginates were tested in vivo and compared to traditional high-mannuronate and -guluronate alginates.
