Much like the history of exegesis, research about the Book of Jonah has known its fashions, its heated debates, its oblivion, and the shifting of questioning. By reviewing the history of this research, we are not producing a new status quaestionis, but we intend to describe the evolution of research in-the history of biblical interpretation, mainly during the 20th Century. This first part will cover up to the year 1983; the second part, in the next issue, will cover from 1983 up to 2004
