Smallpox, an infectious disease that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of people through the ages and accross all continents, has disappeared. Its eradication has been the result of an enourmous and intense collective effort carried out over several years. Furthermore, it made possible the elimination of many of the risks associated, with vaccination against smallpox, which had rare but very real side effects. The 20(th) anniversary of this momentous event will take place on 8(th) May 2000
