The goal of this study was to evaluate the technological feasibility of delivering antigen using alginate microspheres. The microspheres were prepared by an emulsification technique and fully characterized as antigen delivery system. Selection of appropriate parameters enabled the preparation of alginate microspheres with a mean diameter of 8 mu m. The encapsulation efficiency of bovine serum albumin (BSA), chosen as model antigen, as well as the BSA loading were very high (>90% and 10% w/w, respectively). The process of encapsulation did not affect the molecular weight or the antigenicity of the entrapped antigen. The in vitro release profile showed a fast release rate of encapsulated BSA, particularly in phosphate buffered saline solution...
