Chemical and biological fed-batch stirred tank reactors (FSTRs) are often good candidates for the application of adaptive non-linear control techniques because in many cases their dynamical models include highly uncertain kinetic parameters. A general unified methodology for the design of adaptive on-linear controllers for FSTRs is presented. The conditions under which this control approach helps to solve process optimization problems are emphasized
