The mechanisms of radiation effects on polyethylene are investigated by studies of high molecular weight alkanes model compounds. Analysis of final products gives the distribution of alkane dimers. The main features of the chemical aspects of radiation-induced changes in polymers are considered: chain crosslinking, morphology effects, C = C bonds formation, energy transfer, radical decay,... However, the chemical changes observed in model compounds can be quite misleading as models for high molecular weight polymers
