This study seeks to follow the intellectual path of Paul Ricoeur at grips with the notion of identity, against the backdrop of his detailed readings of the philosophy of John Locke. Onesetf as Another (1990) and Memory, History, Forgetting (2000) are at the heart of the topic. Thanks to a new translation into French of the treatise Of Identity and Diversity (by Balibar, 1998), it is shown how Locke is fully situated in the perspective of a phenomenology of the memory. The article also studies certain aspects of The Course of Recognition (2004), the last great work of the philosopher returning to this topic.
