Malia revisited : a GIS-based functional analysis of the pre-, proto- and neo-palatial occupation

The principal aim of this study is to tailor a new position for geographical information systems (GIS) within the frame of intra-site spatial research in archaeology, and to enhance the uses of the technology in the discipline through theoretical and methodological innovation. The research seeks to fulfil this objective through four specific approaches: through a critical evaluation of the position of GIS technology in archaeology; through theoretical reconsideration of what archaeological GIS is and what we can do with GIS in archaeology; through GIS-related technical innovation; and, finally, by assembling these components and outlining two case studies from Malia, one of the largest Bronze Age settlements in north-central Crete (Greece). These two cases studies are respectively the Late Minoan IB occupation at Zeta Beta and Middle Minoan IIB occupation in Building A in the Mu Quarter. The focus in each of these two case studies is on cooking practices. The decision to think through a certain practice (i.e. cooking) while framing a discussion on materials and space, results from 'non-representational thinking'. After a general introduction (Chapter 1), the chapters feature a series of discussions that aim to reconceptualise GIS and its existing critique (Chapter 2), present two new techniques to use GIS at architectural level (i.e. metric and visual integration analysis) (Chapter 3) and bring all these GIS-related innovations together on case studies regarding cooking practices at Zeta Beta and Building A of the Mu Quarter (Chapters 4, 5 and 6). The conclusion of the research is not only that archaeological GIS can be fruitfully employed at architectural level to study everyday, routine practices. It is also concluded that Late Minoan IB occupation at building Zeta Beta and Middle Minoan IIB occupation at Building A embodied very different potentials at Bronze Age Malia when it came to everyday cooking practices.L’objectif principal de cette recherche est de réaliser une nouvelle position pour système d'information géographique (SIG) dans le cadre des recherches spatiales intra-site et d'augmenter l’utilisation de cette technologie dans ces recherches spatiales par des innovations théorétiques et méthodologiques. La recherche aspire d’atteindre cet objectif de quatre manières spécifiques: par une évaluation critique de la position courante de la technologie SIG dans l'archéologie; par une reconsidération théorétique de quoi-t-il s’agit le SIG archéologique et son application en archéologie; par une innovation technique; et, finalement, par l’assemblage de tous ces components et le développement de deux études de cas pour Malia, un des plus grands sites de l’Âge du Bronze au Centre-Nord de Crète (Grèce). Les deux études de cas traitent respectivement l’occupation Minoen Récent IB au Bâtiment Zeta Beta et l’occupation Minoen Moyen IIB en Bâtiment A au Quartier Mu. Pour ces deux études de cas, le focus est mis sur des pratiques culinaires. La décision de penser d’une pratique spécifique (i.e. cuisiner) tandis qu’une discussion sur des matériaux et d’espace suit de ‘non-representational thinking’. Après une introduction générale (Chapitre 1), les chapitres comportent une série de discussions qui visent à conceptualiser de manière innovative le SIG et ses critiques courantes (Chapitre 2), présentent deux nouvelles techniques de SIG d'utilisation au niveau architectural (respectivement l’analyse métrique et l‘analyse d'intégration visuelle) (Chapitre 3) et réunissent toutes ces innovations relaté au SIG dans les deux études de cas concernant des pratiques culinaires à Bâtiment Zeta Beta et Bâtiment A au Quartier Mu (Chapitres 4, 5 et 6). La conclusion de la recherche n’est pas seulement que le SIG archéologique pourra être utilisé avantageusement au niveau architectural pour étudier des pratiques quotidiennes, mais on conclut également que les occupations Minoen Récent IB à Maison Zeta Beta et Minoen Moyen IIB à Maison A évoquent des potentiels très différents pour ce qui concerne des pratiques culinaires quotidiennes à Malia dans l'Âge du Bronze.(ARKE 3) -- UCL, 201
