The principal aim of this study is to tailor a new position for geographical information systems (GIS) within the frame of intra-site spatial research in archaeology, and to enhance the uses of the technology in the discipline through theoretical and methodological innovation. The research seeks to fulfil this objective through four specific approaches: through a critical evaluation of the position of GIS technology in archaeology; through theoretical reconsideration of what archaeological GIS is and what we can do with GIS in archaeology; through GIS-related technical innovation; and, finally, by assembling these components and outlining two case studies from Malia, one of the largest Bronze Age settlements in north-central Crete (Greece)....
