Démocratisation ségrégative de l'enseignement supérieur en Belgique francophone: Le poids de l'autosélection et des familles

This paper based on a cross-university "Catholic University of Leuven, Free University of Brussels, University of Liege "study documents the assumption of segregative democratisation of higher education and explores the transition from secondary to post-secondary education. It shows that student higher education aspirations are marked by self-selection. A variety of influential factors "the latest degree of parents, cultural capital but also how parents view the studies of their children "explain why first-generation students are self-excluded from university education. In Belgium, the segregative democratisation of post-secondary education quite largely results from how students construct their own study plans rather than from formal filters implemented by higher education institutions
