Cystic fibrosis : Current aspects - Future prospects

Au cours des trois dernières décades, le pronostic des patients atteints de mucoviscidose s’est considérable améliorée, leur espérance de vie médiane avoisinant aujourd’hui 30 ans. Une optimalisation du traitement symptomatique de l’affection et une centralisation de sa prise en charge ont permis cette évolution. Poursuivre dans cette voie semble impliquer l’élaboration de stratégies nouvelles donc certaines, découlant de l’identification en 1989 du gène de la mucoviscidose, devraient déboucher sur un traitement plus fondamental de la maladie.The prognosis for patients with cystic fibrosis has shown a progressive improvement over the past three decades and the median life expectancy is currently about 30 years. This is believed to reflect a more comprehensive use of the conventional (symptomatic) approach by more and more centers. Further improvement will require new strategies some of which are derived of the identification of the CF gene in 1989 and should lead to a more fundamental treatment of the disease.
