Dental implants, which are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth, can be complicated by mucositis and peri-implantitis. Similar to periodontitis, these latter are primarily due to the colonization of the implant surface by pathogenic bacteria organized in biofilm, which thus threatens implant survival. Therefore, the removal of this biofilm is of major importance in treating peri-implantitis. In the absence of evidence for a therapeutic protocol eliminating this biofilm, four surface treatments used in clinic - plastic curette, air-abrasive device, titanium brush and implantoplasty - were tested in vitro and in vivo to compare their effects in terms of decontamination and biocompatibility.
