We present new experimental results concerning the slow variation of optical properties of a nematic layer subjected to the strong action of "in-plane" electric field. Slow orientational dynamics and memory effects in nematic layers at a week surface anchoring are studied by using liquid crystals cells of a special construction and treatment. The results are discussed in the framework of hydrodynamic and diffusion models
