Excellent photoalignment of different liquid crystals (LC) on the films of commercially available azo dyes is observed. The ozone treatment procedure allowed us to realize photoalignment on azo dye films deposited on different inorganic and organic substrates used in LCD manufacturing. LC alignment on azo dye films shows extraordinary high photo- and thermal stability. Investigation on characteristic properties of order parameter, azimuthal and polar anchoring energy open up the wide path for utilizing commercially available dyes for different applications.
