Quality of life in patients with duchenne muscular dystrophy and their caregivers belonging to the Colombian Muscular Distribution Foundation in 2019

Al abordar la temática sobre la afectación en la calidad de vida en pacientes con distrofia muscular de Duchenne (DMD), se hizo necesario conocer sobre los términos de esta enfermedad y su padecimiento hereditario. Del mismo modo, se buscó dar a conocer los procedimientos de cuidados rutinarios en salud especiales que requiere esta enfermedad. La DMD, según Muntoni et al.,(2003), es la forma más severa de distrofinopatía y se origina debido a la ausencia total de distrofina funcionante. Por otro lado, la DMD, aunque presente desde el nacimiento, debuta clínicamente a la edad de 2 años, momento en el que se empieza a observar regresión en las habilidades para la marcha con pasos inestables y caídas frecuentes. La pérdida de fuerza muscular es progresiva y afecta de manera predominante a la musculatura proximal de los miembros y los músculos flexores del cuello.When addressing the issue of quality of life impairment in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), it became necessary to know about the terms of this disease and its inherited condition. Likewise, we sought to publicize the special routine health care procedures that this disease requires. DMD, according to Muntoni et al., (2003), is the most severe form of dystrophinopathy and originates due to the total absence of functioning dystrophin. On the other hand, DMD, although present from birth, clinically debuts at the age of 2 years, at which time regression in walking skills begins to be observed with unstable steps and frequent falls. The loss of muscle strength is progressive and predominantly affects the proximal limb muscles and the flexor muscles of the neck
