The paper’s approach is a close reading of the narrative text with a focus on language use. Aspects of the novel such as the tendency towards the negative polarity of language, ambiguity, and the use of light and dark unveil subversive elements in the discourse. Although the novel appears to offer a contained ending by confining the protagonist within the same oppressive system it undermines, readers are invited to reflect on positive social alternati...
