Future wireless communication systems are expected to support a wide range of services which include video, data and voice. To achieve the necessary capacity for these systems, several smart antenna systems have been proposed and demonstrated at the base station of wireless communication systems. In this thesis, the performance of using smart or adaptive antennas at the base and mobile stations in both the down and uplinks is investigated. In addition, the application of this smart antenna systems to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is also considered.
