Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a malignancy, which is the seventh most common fatal cancer worldwide and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Northern China. A novel candidate tumor suppressor gene (TSG), DEC1 (Deleted in Esophageal Cancer 1), has been found located at 9q32 by high frequency of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) by previous investigators. They found that expression of DEC1 was reduced in esophageal carcinoma. The DEC1 cDNA clone is able to suppress cancer cell growth in vitro and tumor growth in vivo in nude mice.
