An efficient hybrid genetic algorithm for topological layout optimization of high-rise residential buildings

Although topological optimization has been recognized as one of the most challenging and rewarding structural optimization tasks. its application to the design of practical buildings has been rather limited. The design of residential buildings allows load-bearing elements to be distributed over the floor plan for partitioning the space into different housing units. Developing the optimal deposition of structural materials to form the most cost efficient structural layout of high-rise residential buildings poses a challenging task for even experienced structural engineers. In this paper, a hybrid OC-GA method, in which a local search operator based on the rigorously derived Optimality Criteria (OC) technique is embedded within a genetic algorithm (GA), is presented to solve the layout design optimization of practical high-rise residential buildings. A hierarchical formulation of topological design variables is introduced to facilitate effective structural form searching. A three-dimensional full-scale 56-story residential building example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the hybrid OC-GA method. Results indicate that the proposed OC-GA method is capable of effectively searching for optimal layout design of practical high-rise residential buildings while producing multiple benefits of reduction of material consumption, increase in usable floor area, and enhanced flexibility in the use of floor space for occupants
