A kinetic approach was employed to determine the rates of metal uptake (Cd, Cr and Zn) from the dissolved phase and the rate constants of metal depuration in the mussel Perna viridis and the clam Ruditapes philippinarum. The effects of ambient metal concentration, salinity, and body size on the metal influx rate were examined. A linear positive relationship was observed between the metal influx rate and the metal concentration in ambient seawater. There was some evidence that Zn uptake was regulated by the bivalves in response to an increase in ambient Zn concentration.
