Using two sets of state variables, the effect of stress dependency and hysteresis in the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) and in the permeability function for transient seepage in unsaturated soils was studied numerically. The results obtained for a typical Hong Kong slope subjected to an idealized rainfall pattern revealed the essential importance of the stress dependency and hysteresis consideration in unsaturated seepage analysis
