An adaptive block-matching algorithm is proposed based on the genetic algorithm for video compression. Novel adaptive elements accelerate and adapt to the evolving process by exploiting the inherent correlation between video pictures. These elements include the initial population selection, the parent selection and the termination judgment. Extensive simulations confirmed that the algorithm can achieve a precise block-matching search with relatively low computational complexity
