THE ROLE OF METACOGNITIVE LISTENING STRATEGIES IN LEARNING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Metacognition plays a very important role in enhancing students’ learning and it means “cognition about cognitive phenomena,’’ or more simply “thinking about thinking”. The metacognitive strategies refer to the actions that learners use consciously while listening to a spoken text attentively. These strategies deal with knowing about learning. It means that learners learn how to listen with metacognitive strategies. With the help of this language learning strategy, learners are involved in thinking about the process of learning while they are planning, monitoring, and evaluating their own learning. Teaching effective metacognitive listening strategies may considerably facilitate and accelerate listening performance and develop self-regulated learning as it provides a context for interpretation and also can assist listeners select their goals, supervise their improvement and assess learning results. The focus of this paper turns to the Metacognitive Pedagogical Sequence of learning activities that integrate metacognitive awareness raising with listening input and comprehension activities
