Following surveys in 1983, 1987 and 1992, IARD\u27s fourth national survey on the living conditions and life perspectives of youth in Italy was carried out in 1996. 2,500 young people aged 15-29 were interviewed in spring 1996. The responses to questions on political engagement and voting behaviour show an increased interest in politics and a tendency to support political extremes. Yet, the return to pronounced ideologies can only be found on the level of discussion and does not result in an active engagement in actual parry work. Young people are predominantly oriented towards a local identity (40%), while the national Italian perspective comes second (32%).
