Living Conditions and Life Perspectives of Young People in Italy. Some Findings of the Fourth Survey on Italian Youth

Following surveys in 1983, 1987 and 1992, IARD\u27s fourth national survey on the living conditions and life perspectives of youth in Italy was carried out in 1996. 2,500 young people aged 15-29 were interviewed in spring 1996. The responses to questions on political engagement and voting behaviour show an increased interest in politics and a tendency to support political extremes. Yet, the return to pronounced ideologies can only be found on the level of discussion and does not result in an active engagement in actual parry work. Young people are predominantly oriented towards a local identity (40%), while the national Italian perspective comes second (32%). Europe (3%) is not perceived as a homeland, but there is strong support for seeing Italy as part of a united Europe (89%). For Italian youth, the pillars of European unification are a single currency (84 %), a common foreign policy (80%), and a strong European Parliament (80%). In response to the economic recession of the 1990s, there is an increased tendency to prolong studies. Full-time and part-time students outnumber employed young people, especially in southern Italy, where youth unemployment is two to three times higher than in the north. Jobs are mainly found with the help of families (31%) or friends (36%), whereas official job centres and other forms of public labour exchange play a minor role. The uneven distribution of Jobs and labour market opportunities in the north and south of Italy are reflected in the degree of young people\u27s job satisfaction: in the north, 90% are satisfied with their job, as compared to 60% in the south. Nach den Berichten von 1983, 1987 und 1992 liegt hiermit die vierte nationale Erhebung über die Lebensbedingungen und Perspektiven Jugendlicher in Italien vor, für welche 2.500 Jugendliche im Alter von 15-29 im Frühjahr 1996 in persönlichen Interviews befragt wurden. Ihre Antworten auf Fragen hinsichtlich politischem Engagement und Wahlverhalten zeigen ein zunehmendes Interesse an Politik und einen Trend zu politischen Extremen, wobei sich die Rückkehr zu Ideologien mit scharfer Ausprägung jedoch auf die Diskussionsebene beschränkt und nicht zu aktiver Beteiligung an der Parteiarbeit führt. In ihren territorialen Bezügen sind junge Menschen in Italien vorwiegend lokal orientiert (40 %), an zweiter Stelle steht die Identifizierung mit Italien als Nation (32 %). Europa (3 %) wird nicht als Heimatland eingestuft, hingegen Italien von einem Großteil der Jugendlichen (89 %) als Teil eines vereinten Europas gesehen. Für die italienische Jugend stellen eine gemeinsame Währung (84 %), eine gemeinsame Außenpolitik (80 %) und ein starkes Europäisches Parlament (80 %) die Säulen der Europäischen Union dar. Der Trend zum längeren Studium hat sich durch die wirtschaftliche Rezession der Neunzigerjahre noch verstärkt. In Italien gibt es mehr Vollzeit- und Teilzeit-Studenten als Jugendliche in Beschäftigungsverhältnissen, insbesondere in Süditalien, wo die Jugendarbeitslosigkeit zwei- bis dreimal so hoch ist wie im Norden. Arbeit wird hauptsächlich durch die Familie (31 %) oder durch den Freundeskreis (36 %) vermittelt, während öffentliche Arbeitsmarkteinrichtungen eine eher untergeordnete Rolle spielen. Die ungleiche Verteilung von Arbeitsplätzen und Chancen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt in Nord- und Süditalien zeigt sich in der Arbeitszufriedenheit der Jugendlichen: im Norden sind 90 % mit ihrer Arbeit zufrieden, im Süden hingegen nur 60 %.
