The papers in this special issue of "Environment and Planning A" were first presented at the session on mathematical demography held at the 1979 Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America in Philadelphia, 26-28 April. They are representative examples of work currently under way in a relatively new branch of mathematical demography becoming known as multistate demography. The authors come from diverse backgrounds and represent different countries.
