This article is an attempt to synthesize material from a number of sources, published originally under such headings as multiregional demography, increment-decrement life tables, marriage tables, and tables of working life. IIASA has had an important role in the elaboration of several lines of work that embrace much of demography, as well as potentially permitting the more convenient study of problems that require the union of demography and economics, demography and sociology, and other combinations of disciplines
