Stress intensity factor has been a favorite tool in fracture mechanics due to its simplicity. Here, it is used to study the influence of the shot peening application in fatigue life improvement. Using a CT-specimen, the study of shot peening effect on fatigue life was performed. Here, the compressive residual stress is converted into residual stress intensity factor, Kres.. Together with the applied stress intensity factor, Kapl., the superposition principle can be used.
