While some of the information in this section of the review reflects events in the other lakes in the Kyoga Catchment, notably Lakes Kwania and Bisina, the major focus is on Lake Kyoga where most data was collected . From the time of Worthington's survey to the early 1950s the lake supported a rich fish fauna. The major commercial fish species were, in order of importance, Oreochromis variabilis, Oreochromis esculentus Protopterus aethiopicus, Bagrus docmac, Clarias gariepinus, Barbus spp and Schilbe intermedius. The lake also supported representatives of the families Mormyridae, Cyprinidae, Claridae, Characidae, Cyprinodontidae, Machochidae, Anabantidae, and Mastercembalidae.
