Traditional methods of measuring light interception can be difficult, time-consuming and expensive due to the constraints involved in direct measurements. By exploiting modern Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensing and state-of-the-art simulation models, many of the results derived from light measurements can be achieved in silico, allowing a single day of fieldwork to replace weeks using more direct methods. Virtual models of existing trees allow analysis of the light environment, as well as geometric measurements like canopy volume.
