BACKGROUND: Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase (CaMKK) is a pivotal activator of CaMKI, CaMKIV and 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), controlling Ca2+-dependent intracellular signaling including various neuronal, metabolic and pathophysiological responses.
