This paper describes a holistic approach to the theory of instantaneous power in three-phase four-wire systems, focusing on the original theory created in 1983 and a modified theory presented in 1994. The two theories are perfectly identical if no zero-sequence voltage is included in a three-phase three-wire system. However, they are different in the instantaneous active and reactive power in each phase if a zero-sequence voltage and current are included in a three-phase four-wire system.
