In contrast to the classical superconductors there is actually no consensus on the theory of high-temperature superconductivity. Especially the symmetry of the order parameter and the coupling mechanism which leads to the superconducting state below a critical temperature Tc are still open questions. In addition, the energy gap Δ as a function of temperature T and a possible existence of the so-called pseudogap above Tc are unsolved problems. Tunneling experiments play an important role to solve this challenge, because they can measure the density of states directly and therefore examine the energy gap and the symmetry of the order parameter.
