This research investigates the impact of maternal obesity without gestational diabetes on the major functions of the human placenta. Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of fat mass and chronic low grade inflammation. Obesity is indicated by a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30 m2/kg. Maternal obesity is associated with health disorders and creates a higher risk for the development of pregnancy complications (pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes).
