Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are both recommended treatments for locally advanced head and neck cancers. During conventional radiotherapy, 70 Grays are given in 35 fractions over 7 weeks (called « conventional fractionation »). Chemotherapy may be given before (induction), at the same time (concomitant) or after (adjuvant) locoregional treatment (surgery and/or radiotherapy). Many randomized clinical trials studied the efficacy of altered fractionated radiotherapy and others studied the addition of chemotherapy to locoregional treatment.
