Flybåren batymetrisk laserskanning brukes i dag til å lage sømløse terrengmodeller mellom land og sjøbunn i kystnære områder. Ved å generere terrengmodeller fra punktskyen til laseren kan man få høyoppløslige og nøyaktige modeller av sjøbunnen. En laserskanner samler ikke bare inn høyde- og dybdedata, men også intensitetsverdier til hvert enkelt punkt. Denne oppgaven undersøker om det er mulig å bruke disse intensitetsverdiene til å skille og klassifisere sedimentene på sjøbunnen. Informasjonen dette gir kan gjøre at sedimentklassifisering i kystsonen blir enklere å gjennomføre, da målebåter ikke slipper til i disse områdene.
