Denitrification is an anaerobic microbial respiratory process, which takes part in the global biogeochem- ical nitrogen cycle. Microbial denitrifiers contribute to the global recirculation of nitrogen, by stepwise reduction of nitrate (NO3–) to dinitrogen gas (N2), via nitrite (NO2-) and the gaseous intermediate prod- ucts nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These gasses have a severe impact on the atmospheric chemistry. NO is involved in the formation of acid rain and of undesired ozone in the troposphere, while nitrous oxide (N2O) is the third most important greenhouse gas, and also the main destructor of stratospheric ozone.
