Throughout the continent, authoritarian regimes have recently crumbled or felt the pressures to liberalise their polities as well as their economies. The demise of authoritarianism has been accompanied by a vocal popular repudiation of personal rule, elitist domination, ethnic entrepreneurship and official corruption.
