Introduction. Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (bloodstream infection) (SAB) is increasingly common in both community and hospital settings. The presence of deep infection focus is pathognomonic for SAB and deep infection foci should be meticulously searched for and eradicated whenever possible. However, despite effective antistaphylococcal antibiotics, radiological investigations and surgical interventions, the overall mortality in SAB has remained high, 14-32%, in recent studies.
