Australasian researchers of tropical medicine currently stand at a crossroads. On one hand, an enormous expansion of scientific activity occurred following the Second World War, and long gone are the days when Australian journals could be dismissed as containing 'mostly case reports on snake bite'. There will always be a niche for periodicals such as ours, given that specialist topics always require specialist journals, and society periodicals have an ongoing responsibility to communicate the ethos of their particular field. On the other hand, smaller journals incur a variety of dilemmas when compared to the larger titles, and biomedical publishing is being increasingly dominated by multinational companies.
