Biyosürfaktanlar, bakteri, maya ve funguslar tarafından sentezlenen yüzey aktif moleküllerdir. Düşük toksisite, yüksek biyolojik bozunabilirlik, daha yüksek köpürme kapasitesi ve aşırı sıcaklıklarda, pH seviyelerinde ve tuzlulukta yüksek aktivite gibi dikkat çekici özelliklerinden dolayı, kimyasal olarak üretilen hemcinslerine kıyasla belirgin üstünlükleri vardır. Son yıllarda biyosürfaktanlar ile yapılan çalışmaların artışı kimyasal sürfaktanların yerine kullanılma potansiyelini de arttırmaktadır.
